MIS has proposed an 18-months project titled “Service for street mothers with children” and “Service for street children” to enhance the economic, educational, and/or social reintegration of 24 street mothers with children and 29 children in Addis Abeba’s Gulele sub-city by providing transitional institutional services and livelihood opportunities. The project also aims to reduce the vulnerability of 24 street mothers with children and 29 children by offering services like shelter, meals, WASH, life skills, health education, and non-formal education at the established centres. Additionally, it aims to protect street mothers with children from living on the streets by collaborating and networking. Finally, it aims to improve the reintegration option for 24 street mothers with children through economic support and entrepreneurship and family reunification for 29 children. The project is funded by World Bank through MoWSA.
As part of the project MIS has been mobilizing resources from various private organizations in addition to the funds secured for the project. As a result, Maleda Foam, Semen Hotel, Gambela Hotel and Marriott Hotel has provided continues support to MIS. MIS has got educational materials for children as well as various food items that will be used in the center from fundraising.
During the last six months, the intervention’s main goals have been to make sure that the mothers and children who stay at the centre receive full sleeping services, eat three healthy meals a day, receive treatment when they become ill, and receive life skills training in areas like communication, personal hygiene, and reproductive health. Individual and group counselling services have also been provided. All mothers are reintegrated as part of the reintegration plan once the needs assessment is completed and they are able to support and participate in their lives by identifying small business ideas and IGAs (income-generating activities). Comprehensive psychosocial services, including age-appropriate and case-specific individual and group counselling, have been provided to all 29 children. As part of reunification plan, after family tracing and family communication has been conducted the children were reunified with their family accordingly.
